It Didn't Feel Right to Continue This

This painting didn’t feel right. Halfway through, I realised I was painting from my head instead of from the place where the work usually comes from. The result looked considered, but it didn’t feel alive. So I painted over it and began again. This piece is the second painting in my Becoming Kin series. The series explores belonging, our relationship with the natural world, and the quieter threads that connect us to place, memory, and each other. For this painting, I kept returning to the idea of roots. I was born in Czechia, lived in the UK for fourteen years, and now live in Portugal. Moving between countries has changed many things in my life, but it hasn’t erased where I come from. If anything, it has made me realise that roots are not about staying in one place. We carry them with us. This painting is part of that reflection. Sometimes the work itself tells you when something is off. And sometimes the only honest response is to start again.
