Any trainer can get you tired, but that doesn’t mean it’s good coaching. Here are five criteria good trainers should meet: 💡 1. Trainers should understand and manage training load relative to the athlete’s load capacity, adjusting volume, intensity, and frequency to support adaptation. 📊 2. They should preferably monitor both internal and external metrics. Internal metrics that could be used are ratings of perceived exertion and psychological state measures. External metrics that could be used are the weight lifted for repetitions, bar speed, or power output. 🎯 3. Trainers should ensure the training programs are specific to the athlete’s goals and needs. 📈 4. Progressive overload must be applied to promote continual adaptation and performance improvement. 🧠 5. Trainers should understand that exhaustion doesn’t equal effective training. So if you’ve had a trainer who simply left you exhausted, ask yourself whether these principles were actually considered. Feeling exhausted after a training session isn’t inherently bad at all, but it doesn’t directly mean the training was effective either. #humanmovementsciences #sportscience #exercisescience #fitness #coaching
