What’s a stress reaction A stress reaction is a bone injury that results from overload, typically from repetitive stress that it can’t handle. If not managed appropriately, it can lead to a stress fracture and then complete fracture. This is part of why the club are being so prudent with Curtis. Key injury variables Tibial stress reactions are the most common occurring in the lower body. They’re further delineated by location as posteriomedial (back-inner part) stress reactions are considered low risk whereas anterior (front) are considered high risk for fracture. Injury management Managing stress reactions is all about load management - cutting out the overload - and then proper progressions - ramping up gradually and assessing the response. Curtis had a negative reaction so the physios dialed his activity down again. Return timeline Jones’ activity was initially dialed down for three weeks but the hope is this time won’t be as long. However, there is no definite timeline on his return to play because - as mentioned - it really depends on how the shin responds to that increased stress. It can be a frustrating process but you have to be careful with these injuries, lest it turn into something worse. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
