In this talk, Edel shares why the right to dignity in dying is a fundamental human right, and why people still struggle to talk openly or plan meaningfully for the one thing that is guaranteed for all of us. She explores how the NHS has unintentionally medicalised a natural process, leading many to believe that hospital is the most appropriate place to die, despite it often being impersonal, undignified, and far removed from what most people would truly choose. Drawing on her personal experiences, key UK human rights legislation, and a touch of humour, Edel invites audiences to rethink end-of-life choices and discover how they can advocate for a death that aligns with their values, wishes, and dignity. Edel is a nurse with a deep passion for human rights and a firm belief in just and inclusive healthcare. Outside of work, she can usually be found cooking and sharing food with friends, singing, or walking the coast or the Downs with her family and beloved hound. She is committed to living life fully and intentionally. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
