Magnus Larsson is an architect with a background in journalism and advertising. His Dune Arenaceous Anti-desertification Architecture project won the Next Generation prize at the 2008 Holcim Awards, was profiled by Bldgblog's Geoff Manaugh, and then picked up by publications such as Wired, Slashdot, PSFK, LA Times, New Scientist, and the BBC. In July 2009, the London-based architect presented the terraforming scheme which seeks to harness a particular microorganism to solidify sand dunes into a 6,000km long architectural structure in order to help stop desert encroachment in the Sahara/Sahel region of Africa at the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford, UK. He has since presented his work at several international conferences, including two Pecha Kucha events, and (most recently) the Design For Change talks in Jerusalem, Israel, where he also led a workshop with students from the Bezalel Univeristy. The workshop was based both on Dune and on Larsson's concept of Radical Optimism, which will also form part of this TEDx talk in Gothenburg. About TEDx, x=independently organize event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
