The Strada dei Cannoni (Cannon Road) is an old military road built in the early 18th century to support the rapid movement of troops and the supply of fortifications. The aim was to control the Varaita Valley (Valle Varaita) in the north and the Maira Valley (Valle Maira) in the south. The military road runs in an east-west direction as a ridge road at an altitude of over 2000 metres, switching from the north to the south side of the mountain ridge and back at various points. The ridge road is around 34 kilometres long and connects the Colletto di Valmala in the east with the Colle Bicocca in the west. The eastern access to the ridge road can be reached via the Colletto di Valmala, e.g. from Venasca / Brossasco in the Varaita Valley after about 15 km on a tarmac country road. You will also pass the Santuario di Valmala on this journey. Also from the northern Varaita Valley, after a 15 km drive from the village of Sampeyre, you will reach the Col di Sampeyre, which provides access to the ridge road about 6 km east of Colle Bicocca. Coming from the east (Colletta di Valmala), the route initially follows an easy tarmac road for about 5 km to Colle della Ciabra. From here, the route becomes a gravel road, but is still easy to cycle on. At Colle Birrone, the road becomes steep, quite narrow in some hairpin bends and generally very stony, as the old road surface of stones and boulders can still be found in many places. At Colle Rusciera, the road changes back to the south side of the ridge. Here there are some landslide zones and the road surface is very coarse gravel. The road only improves again 2 kilometres before the Col di Sampeyre. The route is closed in winter from October to June. When travelling the route, special attention should be paid to the weather conditions. The road is located in the Italian province of Cuneo in the Piedmont region. ▬ Content ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Intro 00:15 Prolog 01:32 The Ride 49:07 And the Mavic spoke... 53:08 Outro ▬ Links ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Playlist Italy: • Italy / Italien Playlist Passes: • Passes / Pässe WalkTheMavic: / @walkthemavic4197 ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Walk The Mavic (WTM) - Interesting roads, passes and gorges in the Alps - Nature and landscapes - Castles, forts, fortresses and fortifications - Photos and videos, if possible and allowed, also aerial photos/videos with the drone.
