What is an Engine Decarbon Service? Today we are going to talk about cleaning the carbon out of an engine. We call it a decarbon service. When you push on the gas pedal, there is a plate and it's called a butterfly and it allows air to enter your engine. What happens is when you shut your engine off, there is vapors down by the oil in the bottom of the engine in the crank case. As they rise, they create a gooey mess. As that mess builds up on the intake manifold and throttle plate, it can restrict how the air is supposed to flow. It can also restrict how the fuel is supposed to flow and how the injector sprays onto the intake valves. So we have a mist system that runs a chemical through there and cleans the carbon out. Then we open the throttle plate and clean both sides of the throttle valve. Typically, you experience you don't have as crisp of acceleration or your fuel economy drops. We only need to do this service every 50,000 to 60,000 miles. The exception to that is if you have a direct fuel injected engine, which is getting more common. The fuel directed into the piston area and the valves don't get clean and that builds very fast. The only way to get that carbon off is to use a walnut blast to clean the valves off. So those type of engines need to be done once a year or 15,000 miles. Welcome to Mercie J Auto Care, Where Compassion and Craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith, certified master technician.
