After an almost 2 year hiatus from sea scout competitions, 8 crews competed against each other at the 2021 Southwestern Rendezvous, which is a sea scout competition in Cabrillo Beach, CA, USA. One of the events the youth are required to compete in is "Heaving Line' or throwing a heaving line about 30ft and having the line resting over the target. After watching all the "unique" ways we witnessed scouts throwing a heaving line, we decided it was time to show the youth how it's done and break down the basics! We will go over when heaving lines are used, what they can be made from, and how to properly throw the line over the target. As described in the Southwestern Rendezvous Event Manual: The purpose of this event is to demonstrate the ability to get a line from one vessel to another or from a vessel to the dockside, with a monkey's fist. A throw is considered successful if the monkey’s fist traveled over the bar and landed beyond it, between the two pins. Once a successful throw is achieved, no additional throws are necessary. All other throws will be judged unsuccessful. Because the distance between the thrower and the target is understood to represent water, the monkey's fist may not bounce over the rail. Scouts will not be allowed to flip drag their monkey’s fist after a throw. No practice throws are allowed.
