In this video, I take you through a real-life running technique case study with Ant — a trail runner who came to see me after his first 11km trail race didn’t quite go to plan. Despite a strong start, Ant’s race fell apart in the back half due to fatigue and cramping. Like many runners, he was training hard but without much structure, running most sessions fast, with limited focus on technique, fuelling, or aerobic development. Over the past six months, we’ve worked on: Improving running technique and cadence Shifting most training to aerobic (Zone 2) running Building consistency and weekly mileage safely Gradually introducing strides and strength-based sessions The results have been significant — Ant has improved his aerobic pace, increased his weekly volume, and is now running more efficiently at both easy and faster paces. In this video, we: Review Ant’s current running form Compare his easy pace vs tempo pace mechanics Break down his foot strike and cadence Use drills (including butt kicks) to reinforce better mechanics Discuss what we’ll focus on next in his training If you’re a trail runner (or any runner) looking to improve efficiency, avoid injury, and perform better over hilly courses, this case study will give you plenty to think about.
