Episode 1: Why are we having this conversation now? Stress is rising, personally, locally, and globally. Alcohol is one of the most common tools that we go-to for the relief we seek. Sometimes the Use doesn't go well for us. But, if we can be in charge of ourselves, we can learn the Modern Recovery system of Moderation and not suffer in the old punitive paradigm of full stop/abstinence and suffering failure in lapsing. This podcast conversation is a game-changer. It may just save your life. One of the things Dr. Perron shares in this podcast is for you to learn how long it takes your liver to heal and your blood pressure to return to normal after a binge. You can plan for this in Moderation. And, she says: "Moderation begins where you are. It doesn't cut you down." From Susan: Meeting people where they are? Not judging, blaming or shaming? Yes to that. YOUR CALL TO ACTION: At the end of each of the episodes in this 12-part series, Dr. Perron will issue a challenge to support your personal agency, taking control of your energy and of your life. Go straight to 42:30 for this week's challenge. Here's Challenge #1: Part A-- Examine the role of alcohol in your life. Exactly what role does it serve? Part B-- Work to eat more protein. 20 grams/day for women, 30 grams for men -- eat some protein every 4 hrs. (HELPFUL HINT: Why not start a journal as a supplement to this Special Series? Writing it down/writing it out will help you to integrate and process this material.) In this system that treats you as the whole human you are, it's useful to take a multi-pronged approach to create your lifestyle of using alcohol in moderation: 1. Moderate my alcohol use. Learn the markers of moderate use, then be honest with how much you're drinking yourself. Consider a small step down. 2. Is my brain functioning properly? 3. Am I moving (enough) during the day? 4. How much stress am I dealing with daily? 5. What are my health issues? Digestion, diabetes markers, fatigue, brain fog, etc. 6. Notice the way you feel during the day, what happens at certain times of day, can you connect it to anything in your past?
