After completing a 40 hour ferry journey from Spain we arrived in Ireland to embark on a 3 week clockwise loop. Touring the Emerald Isle in January was always a risky bet and true to predictions we were subjected to some ‘challenging’ conditions for much of our visit. Weather aside, we experienced stunning stretches of coast, colourful villages and rolled past patchwork fields stitched together with timeless stone walls. Our journey started with a drive around the Ring of Kerry and then 2500 kilometres of the aptly named Wild Atlantic Way, which followed narrow roads and lanes thru farmland, along cliff tops and beside beaches until we reached the impressive Causeway Coast. Once there we spent time hiking past the incredible Giants Causeway and nearly got blown back to Australia as we encountered cyclonic winds. We finished off the loop with a history lesson in Belfast doing the political tour before heading south to indulge in the culture, pubs and beers of Dublin. If this is Ireland at its wildest and wettest, we’re more than happy to keep exploring without having to share it with a throng of fair weather tourists…..
