A provocation and conversation with eminent evaluation researcher A/Prof Amy Gullickson. Have you ever struggled to make judgements explicit in your evaluation? Do you find it hard to connect facts to values in your reports in a way that allows decisions to be made? Evaluative reasoning is a fundamental feature of evaluation. But recent Australian research tells us that evaluative reasoning isn’t always present in evaluation reports. In this session we’ll hear about research conducted by Drs Kathryn Meldrum and Amy Gullickson that analysed the presence of evaluative reasoning in a set of publicly available evaluation reports. Amy will present the framework they developed to help make evaluative reasoning easier to do (we hope). We’ll talk about how evaluative reasoning works. But we also want to hear from you, so the majority of this session will be a discussion about the barriers and enablers for making evaluative reasoning explicit in reports and your feedback on the framework. Presenter details: Associate Professor Amy Gullickson is an AES Fellow who has been doing, researching, and teaching evaluation for more than 20 years. She is in demand internationally as an expert in evaluation-specific methodology, evaluation teaching and learning, and evaluation capacity building for individuals, organisations, and systems. As a member of the AES Pathways committee, she co-leads the ongoing work on evaluator competencies and self-assessment.
