Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 10 miles east of Manchester, is the town of Hadfield. Geographically, Hadfield is situated along the northwestern fringe of the Peak District National Park, and just south of the River Etherow which once defined part of the historic county border between Derbyshire and Cheshire. For the majority of its history, Hadfield was a tiny settlement based around agriculture. This began to change around the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Water mills were built around the River Etherow from the late 18th century, and later followed by steam-powered cotton mills. These were a major source of employment in the area up until the mid 20th century with the eventual closure of the mills. In 1844 the railway arrived in Hadfield courtesy of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. The line originally ran from Sheffield to Manchester, traversing the entirety of the Peak District. However, in 1970 it was cut down to a branch line from Manchester in the west to the twin termini of Hadfield and Glossop to the east. Following the opening of the railway station, significant development took place on the town's main street, namely Station Road. In 1998 filming began on the BBC TV series The League of Gentlemen. This surreal dark comedy was set in the fictional town of Royston Vasey (whose name comes from the real name of comedian Roy Chubby Brown). The outdoor scenes were filmed on location here in Hadfield. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
