Have you ever watched a film or a TV show and thought -- What were they thinking, that would never happen? I am an Afghanistan Cultural Advisor for plays, films and television productions. This video is about how Afghans are portrayed on screen and on paper. In the video, I walk you through scenes from three films set in Afghanistan —Rock the Kasbah, The Kite Runner Movie and Lone Survivor— comment on the production of the audiobook ‘A Door in the Earth’, and I share clips from popular YouTube travelers Drew Binsky and Indigo Traveller’s trips to Afghanistan. I hope to give you a glimpse into what I see when I’m working as a Cultural Consultant on a production set in Afghanistan. I created this video is to share my desire for greater cultural authenticity in film and the media. I’m glad that the world is intrigued by Afghanistan and it has inspired many books, movies, television shows, and theatrical productions, but, more often than not, Afghans and Afghanistan are misportrayed. Cultural authenticity imbues the character’s name, motivations, dialect, backstory and juxtaposes them against the backdrop of historical events, costume, makeup, body language, and the setting of scenes. Don’t get me wrong, most production teams want to get it right and they try, but it’s when they don’t know what they don’t know that cultural misrepresentation and cultural appropriation sneak in. When I work on a project, I spend a great deal of time explaining Afghanistan’s history, customs, geopolitical sparring which helps in understanding why things are the way they are and can help in building a more nuanced backstory for characters. I educate my clients on why Afghans pray differently from Saudis, how Afghans communicate with their body and how Afghans have been impacted by two decades of war. A Google search can not replace the innate knowledge of Afghanistan.
