(But ideally, don’t microwave plastic at all.) ❌ Plastics to Avoid for Food ❌ #3 – PVC Contains phthalates Used in cling wraps, squeeze bottles Can leach harmful chemicals into fatty or oily foods ❌ #6 – PS (Polystyrene / Styrofoam) Breaks down easily Not stable when hot Can release styrene, a chemical linked to health concerns ❌ #7 – “Other” (especially polycarbonate) Often contains BPA Used in older water bottles, older food containers Can leach with heat, acid, and long storage times If a plastic is worn out, cloudy, or scratched → throw it out. Scratches = more surface area for chemicals to enter your food.
