The no-input mixing board (NIMB) is a complex, beautiful feedback instrument. However, it is often treated as an unknowable source of chaotic sounds, when in fact it operates by fairly predictable rules of feedback and sound shaping. This video demonstrates some of my thoughts on how to approach the no-input mixing board as a modular, composable set of feedback loops that can be routed together to produce more complex sounds. As is always the case with feedback instruments, please be careful to protect your ears and equipment if you're going to try experimenting with the NIMB. Don't plug your headphones or speakers directly into the mixing board, and it's best to use something like a limiter in order to set a maximum possible loudness for the output. 0:00 Sound Example 1:01 Introduction 1:44 Assumed Knowledge 2:39 Protect Your Ears and Equipment 3:36 Mackie 1202 Overview 4:37 First Patch - Aux Send to Channel Input 6:45 Pre-amp and Low Cut 8:28 Adding a Second Channel - Pre vs Post Fader Sends 11:49 Channel Inserts for Building Stable Oscillators 13:58 Chords and Harmony 14:49 Mute/Alt Outputs 16:41 Source Matrix and Control Room Outputs 17:22 Signal Flow Review 18:00 Tape In/Out Feedback Loop 19:33 Final Patch 21:38 Outro I'm going to be following up this video with a few tutorials that go into depth on specific techniques for patching and routing on the mixing board. If you have any questions, let me know and I will try to address them either in the comments or in a future video. I'm working on an album and a sample pack of no-input mixing board material.
