To be bullied is to be given a role you do not want. More specifically, it is be given one of the following “honourable” unofficial titles: 1. The scapegoat. You get blamed for everything, even problems you were not present to create and never participated in. You may even be the quietist harmless person. It’s not logical. It’s just easy. 2. Prey. Mammals do not only hunt to feed and survive. They also hunt for play: just watch a documentary on dolphins and see for yourself. These seemingly adorable creatures can viciously use puffer fish for their personal entertainment. Humans do the same thing, it seems. To be the prey is to be the person no one takes seriously. Jokes are always about you. People want to know about your life, not to get to know you, but to make fun of you. 🫠 No one overtly insults you. But they do belittle you. After prolonged periods of time, the disrespect begins to register and it is painful. 💡 The way out of these dynamics is counterintuitive. 1) Scapegoat: If you are blamed for something you didn’t do, don’t defend yourself. It makes you look guilty. Dont try an make anyone feel better. If you feel weird not saying anything, you can say something like “…Are you ok?” (The key with this one is to pause for about three seconds and look at them before asking the question) 2) Prey: if you are the subject of every joke, don’t laugh and go along with it. Don’t confront directly either. Be calm, confused, and curious. “Hmmm, i don’t follow. What are you talking about?” #bullying #advice
