MAN Huddle 05.02.26 Topic: Maximising the use of ethnicity data – developing a guide for analysts With Mike Woodall, Analytics Manager, The Strategy Unit High-quality ethnicity data is essential for identifying, understanding and addressing inequalities across health and care. Yet many analysts still face practical challenges in how ethnicity data is recorded, analysed, interpreted and used. This Midlands Analyst Network Huddle forms part of the next phase of work following NHS England’s national Ethnicity Recording Improvement Plan, which was supported by the Strategy Unit. In this session, I will be joined by Mike Woodall, Analytics Manager (Strategy Unit) who will introduce early thinking on a practical guide for analysts working in health and care, designed to support more confident, consistent and meaningful use of ethnicity data. While rooted in NHS-focused work, the learning and principles are relevant across the wider health and care landscape. The guide is very much in development, and this Huddle is an opportunity for the MAN community to help shape it. The session will: • recap the national context and why ethnicity data matters for tackling inequalities • explore a balance of good practice examples and practical analytical considerations • reflect on common challenges when working with ethnicity data • invite best practice examples, with the aim of publishing selected examples in the final guide Who is this session for? Analysts working in health and care, and anyone interested in improving how ethnicity data is used to support fairer, more equitable decision-making.
