Male Lions Chase Elephant Calf

Early one morning during August 2023 we found an old lioness and 2 young males from the Capricorn pride having a drink, north of Mopani in the Kruger National Park. After their drink, the 2 young males noticed an elephant calf that was isolated from the herd. The youngest of the 2 males began chasing the calf, and then the older male joined in. The elephant calf initially ran away and trumpeted his disapproval (Volume up) of being chased by the big cats. He then unexpectedly turned and chased the lions before eventually running off and going to rejoin the safety of his herd. The young male lions seemed to just be trying their luck with the elephant calf as they are still learning about what prey they will be able to hunt. They wisely decided to leave the calf alone once he rejoined his herd as an angry mother elephant with other adults would be a dangerous situation for the lions.
