N&W 611, An RS-11, Coal and CPL’s In The Shenandoah Valley 10/17/2025

Taking a weekend off from work I along with some friends was able to chase The Shenandoah Valley Limited with the N&W 611. Day one would be especially busy starting out with following the excursion from Goshen to Swoope with a stop at North Mountain for a meet with an empty CSX coal train. After chasing the morning run we got word that the nearby Shenandoah Valley Railroad was operating a caboose hop with their Ex N&W RS-11 for power. We caught the caboose hop at Pleasant Valley, and then keeping with the N&W theme of the day we moved south to get some N&W CPL’s. Arriving at CP Pkin in Vesuvius we set up at the 1920’s-40’s era N&W CPL’s for a meet between NS 15T and NS 12Z. These signals are on borrowed time as NS is almost done with swapping out these signals for newer ones made by Siemens. After getting some pictures and videos of the CPL’s at Pkin we moved back over to the Buckingham Branch to get one last shot of the 611. We arrived back at Goshen and were treated with bonus, along with the N&W 611 on The Shenandoah Valley Limited we also were treated to another empty CSX coal drag heading west. The last train after supper, would be Amtrak’s Cardinal, arriving in Staunton 7 and half hours late after having to set out a locomotive in Indiana.
