In the early morning hours of June 10, 2023 Reading & Northern ran an extra freight train from North Reading to Lehighton to put 100 tanker cars into long-term storage. The consist of 3 locomotives, 1 buffer car, and 100 tank cars made this the longest Reading & Northern freight train I've caught so far. But that wasn't the only thing that made this chase unusual. The train passed south through Jim Thorpe station in the middle of a busy morning. The northbound Bike Train had to clear the way first, and then the locomotives had to wait for the southbound Pittston train (PIJT) to pass before they could return to the mainline. Even more unusual was the way I did this chase. I only chased half the distance ... but I ended up with video of the full chase! How did I manage that?! Easy! I collaborated with Collin from ‪@PANortheasternRailfan‬ in a chase that resembled a relay race. Collin started in North Reading Yard, going as far as East Mahanoy Junction, while I started just north of Tamaqua and covered the remaining distance. We had talked about doing something like this for a while now, and the NRLE was a great chance to put our idea to the test. We each ran two cameras at most of the locations, then gave one of the clips to each other. The different camera angles make each of our videos complete yet unique.
