Welcome to Week 2 of our Beginner BJJ Series at Samurai Spirit Jiu-Jitsu — North Vancouver! 🥋🔥 In this lesson, we build on last week’s fundamentals by learning how to progress from Half Guard to Side Control or Mount using clean, reliable mechanics. ⸻ 🧩 What You’ll Learn This video breaks down the essential elements of a strong half-guard pass: ✔️ 1. Winning the Underhook Battle The safest and strongest way to shut down their offense and start your pass. ✔️ 2. Establishing a Heavy Crossface Controls their upper body, flattens their shoulders, and kills their mobility. ✔️ 3. Clearing the Kneecap How to free your trapped leg using: • Knee slide pressure • Hip angle changes • Proper weight distribution ✔️ 4. Two Finishing Options You’ll complete the pass with either: 🔥 Knee Cut Finish (direct path to side control) 🔥 Leg Pummel to Mount (when they block the knee cut) Both routes are beginner-friendly and used at every level of Jiu-Jitsu. ⸻ 🔗 How This Fits Into the 16-Week Curriculum Week 2 focuses on progressing once you’ve opened the guard (Week 1): • Week 1: posture, opening guard, early controls • Week 2: passing sequences and transitions • This lesson links the Guard Pass → Half Guard → Side Control/Mount chain The goal is to understand not just the move, but the flow between positions. 🏯 Train With Us in North Vancouver!
