A steak sandwich is probably top tier when it comes to luxury sandwiches, am I right? It has to start with a really delicious steak, and then layer upon layer of meaningful toppings, because if you’re going to put it on top of steak it should be worthy right? So those toppings for me are caramelized onions (because they are both savory and naturally sweet), arugula (a current favorite green that has that slightly bitter bite) dressed in a balsamic dressing, and then garlic aioli (something brighter that cuts through all those decadent flavors). This is really something special and I’m sure once you give this a watch you’re going to be craving it too. Ingredients (1-2 servings) 1 lb new york strip steak (you can use other cuts of steak if you prefer) 1 medium yellow onion 3 tablespoons of mayo 1 clove of garlic 1 cup arugula 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp olive oil 1 baguette or bread of choice Butter Recipe (1-2 servings) 1. Chop onion into thin strips 2. Add a tablespoon of butter to a pot over medium heat 3. Add your onion and lightly salt 4. Stir occasionally until onion is nicely caramelized, around 15 minutes 5. At the very end you can add a few tbsp of water to slightly hydrate your onion for texture, set aside 6. Season room temperature steak liberally with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper 7. Bring a cast iron pan up to high heat and add a few tbsp of cooking oil 8. Place steak down on the pan, pressing to make sure it makes good contact with the pan 9. Cook on each side for ~5 minutes (this is a larger steak) or until medium rare or your desired steak temperature 10. Set aside to rest 11. Add mayo to a bowl and grate in your garlic and add a pinch of salt 12. Mix and set aside 13. Whisk together balsamic vinegar and olive oil with a pinch of salt until emulsified 14. Add in arugula and toss 15. Slice toasted bread 16. Cut steak to about 1/2 inch thick slices 17. Layer on garlic aioli, followed by a layer of steak, the onions and then the dressed arugula 18. Put the other half of the bread on top and slice if desired and serve!
