Spine CARs are probably the hardest movement sequence to wrap your head around, next to knee CARs. Our spine has four functions: flexion (rounding), extension (think good position), rotation (twisting) and lateral flexion (think pouring water out of your ear). Your CAR is supposed to go through those ranges of motion, with emphasis on how deep you can get into each position, WITHOUT neighboring joints moving. Most back pain can be attributed to a lack of segmental movement between vertebrae and a lack of lumbar spine flexion, which will be addressed extensively in the future. As always, if you get pinching or sharp pain during any portions of the sequence, avoid those areas and work wherever you can manage. Discomfort and dull pain we usually work through unless it proves to make symptoms worse. If you feel restricted or “stuck” during any part of this, you likely need additional internal training to address those movement deficits.
