Dr Ozello's Sports Medicine Report: Transverse Abdominis (TVA's) (TA's) **Disclaimer: Viewing this video does not take the place of seeing a medical professional. Please visit a medical professional for evaluation, diagnosis & treatment. Never perform an exercise that elicits or intensifies symptoms. If an exercise elicits or intensifies symptoms, stop immediately and use a viable substitute. Origin: Anterior iliac crest, lateral half of inguinal ligament, thoracolumbar fascia & costal cartilage of ribs #7-12 Insertion: Abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba, xiphoid process & pubic symphysis. Innervation: Anterior primary rami (T7-12), Ilioinguinal nerve (L1), Subcostal nerve (T12) & Iliohypogastric nerve (L1). Function: Stabilization of spine, support abdominal wall, compress abdomen, aid forced expiration & increasing intra-abdominal pressure. Strengthen your core and tighten your waist with stomach vacuums. These important exercises develop the transverse abdominis muscles, often abbreviated to TA's or TVA's. The transverse abdominis muscles are the deepest of the abdominal muscles. The TA's run along the transverse plane and wrap around the abdominal region. They act as a support belt. The TA's originate in the lateral aspect of the lower ribs, upper hips, upper pelvis and thoracolumbar fascia. They attach to the center of the abdomen. The TA's primarily function is stabilization of the spine. The best exercises for the transverse abdominis muscles engage a large number of core muscles but focus on the TAs. Vacuums are a valuable tool to build core strength. Perform vacuums as a regular component in your core training. Strengthen your transverse abdominis muscles with the consistent utilization of stomach vacuums. Incorporate a variety of positions to target the core muscles at multiple angles. Use stomach vacuums to increase core strength, help prevent sports injuries and help rehabilitate sports injuries.
