February started slow, sort of. The first of the month, and first thing in the morning, we had the hammerhead and then ended that day with a very murky distant shot of a manatee (not in recap, very hard to make it out). The water was rough and murky for the first part and what we saw mostly during that time was the barnacle, Gene Simmons, and all the baby pork, wrasse, damsel, and possibly either glassy sweeper or post-larval surgeonfish (not really sure what it was, and we more than welcome your input on that – this can be found at 2.22 in the video). Had to put some effects into it because the action happening is so small that I needed to draw the eye to what is going on. Ballyhoo made its first known debut in front of the camera and it was spectacular. If you missed it live, check out the scene with the bait and watch the snook start striking for them. There were even several birds that were smashing through the water trying to claim some for themselves. Eventually, the waters calmed, and the fish started getting aggressive and active. Grunts became “screaming” mad, blennies got vicious over their territories, a shoal of cowfish met up in the distance, barracudas gathered in masses, a cobia made a close night pass, the hammerhead became somewhat of a regular this month, crabs were falling and floating all over the place (would have loved to have seen the big crab at 54 seconds jump, that would have been crabtastic), and the birds picked a peck of pickled piling pole prawns (I have Peter Piper on my mind). Of course, the last day of the month was the absolute best. Turtles, more birds, sea hare (next month), a hidden ray, the adult blueheaded wrasse is back, a pair of orange filefish (next month – and that footage will be off the chain!), and lastly, a new species to Spinner is the Stargazer. Unfortunately, the Stargazer didn’t make the recap because of the distance but it was definitely noteworthy (soon to be posted on the Fish Guide found at www.dfb.city/fish).
