Video of the article; https://p2infohouse.org/ref/12/11519.pdf COMPOST EFFECT ON COTTON GROWTH AND YIELD By: Aziz Shiralipour, Ph.D. Center for Biomass Progmns University of Florida Gainsville. Florida Eliot Epstein, Ph.D. E&A Environmental Consultants, Inc. Canton, Massachusetts This paper details the initial year's findings of a three-year project designed to demonstrate the agronomic benefits of utilizing municipally derived compost on commercial cotton farms. The study, conducted on a 72-acre site in California, compared standard farming practices to plots amended with yard waste and biosolids compost at rates of three and six dry tons per acre. The results indicated that the compost significantly improved plant growth, cotton yield, and soil water retention, attributing these gains to enhanced physical and chemical properties of the soil, including the slow release of organic nitrogen and increased micronutrients. Notably, the percentage of improvement was often greater in the plots with higher salt concentrations, suggesting compost's strong potential to remediate challenging soil conditions.
