Bell’s Palsy (Facial Paralysis) | Causes (Viruses), Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment Bell Palsy is a condition involving paralysis of the facial nerve (Cranial nerve VII), which is responsible for facial movements and expressions, taste sensation and lacrimation. In Bell’s Palsy, the facial nerve is affected due to ischemia, edema or another process that may be triggered by a viral infection with particular viruses (herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster virus) or some bacteria (mycoplasma and syphilis). In this lesson, we discuss the facial nerve and pathophysiology of Bell’s palsy, the signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated by clinicians. I hope you find this lesson helpful.
