For more than five decades, Martha Flores has been known as “La Reina de la Noche” (The Queen of the Night) for her evening talk show on Miami’s AM radio station Radio Mambi. Ms. Flores prides herself on serving the community through her nightly broadcasts, but a recent fall put her show on hold. The Baptist Health South Florida News team has the story. Want to see more? [Doctor walking with patient in hallway] Lauren Crocco: So she had a femoral neck fracture. So if you imagine the hip is a ball and socket joint, she broke where the ball meets the shaft of the femur in the actual neck portion of it. Luckily for her, even though she had broken it, it had not displaced. And the benefit of having a broken but not displaced femoral neck is that we get to fix it instead of having to replace it. Martha Flores: [foreign language 00:00:55]. [Patient doing therapy exercise] Lauren Crocco: Ms. Flores is an exceptional patient. She's very incentivized and she wanted to get up and out of bed and back to work as soon as possible. It is such a privilege to be an orthopedic trauma surgeon. The patients that you get to meet they're from all aspects of the world, from people like Ms. Flores to people who were running in the street, people who were injured doing their sporting activities. You meet all different types of people and it's a real privilege that they have to trust you immediately. I met Ms. Flores and I had her in the operating room by the end of the day. And then to see them go through their worst moment of the injury and then improve over the next three to six months, it's really a wonderful experience.
