In January 2024, I broke both my ankles and tibias in an accident. My left leg required surgery with a rod inserted in the tibia and plates screwed into both sides of the ankle, essentially a metal splint to hold everything together. My right ankle also required surgery (pilon fracture and lost 2cm of cartilage), however, the damage is so bad that the attempts to get the bone to grow and fill in haven't worked yet. I will try a bone stimulator next. During my recovery, I attend physical therapy 2-3 days per week. Finding ways to get around safely while healing is a challenge. That's why I wanted to share my experience with two hands-free mobility aids that helped me during this time: the iWalk3.0 and the Freedom Leg. iWalk3.0: • don't need a cane due to the peg-leg construction • easy on stairs, but backward is safest Freedom Leg: • I currently need a cane to help my balance - some places - but I am working towards not using one • easy on stairs and front facing • can wear while in the car • easy on and off Facebook: Freedom Leg brace Instagram: freedomlegbrace Conclusion: Both the iWalk3.0 and the Freedom Leg play a valuable role in my recovery by allowing me to get around more easily and keep my hands free for everyday tasks. If you've suffered a similar injury, I recommend talking to your doctor or physical therapist about whether these devices might be right for you.
