The efficiency of a solar cell determines how much of the solar power is converted to electrical power. In order to predict the solar cell efficiency before fabrication and to achieve a deeper understanding, different models have been developed for calculating the maximum energy conversion efficiency. This video shows how to calculate the Shockley-Queisser efficiency. As an example the case of the sun as a black body of 6000 K, the solar cell at 300 K and the silicon band gap of 1.12 eV are considered. The Matlab implementation is discussed. The effect of concentration is discussed and the results are compared to the Trivich-Flinn efficieny.
