Many young children today do not have good control of their hands and fingers. They lack the agility and motor control required to properly hold a pencil, perform handwriting, and other manual hand skills requiring skillful control. Here are some very simple exercises to begin teaching them control, finesse, soft-touch, sequencing, and rhythm of movement. This routine was one of THE most profound activities I did with my elementary school PE students. The kindergarteners, in particular, were absolutely mesmerized by the challenge of using their own fingers with a controlled sequence. Many struggled initially to do them correctly and in the right order, but they all improved. Sadly, I have had students as old as 5th grade that could not do them! They were never taught how to use their hands and fingers with control of movement when younger which is why I start them with kindergarteners the very first week of school. Learning how to use one's hands is critical for proper brain development not to mention improving overall hand skills and finger coordination. Take them slowly. Have fun. Add some music that helps with rhythm. Find your way, but always consider the importance of hand and finger coordination in physical and general education. (I will also post a "Parent Video" further explaining these drills and why they are important and also why we are seeing so many young children needing occupational therapy for hands and fingers as early as 1st grade now.) -Ron Jones, MS, Historical Kinesiologist, Physical & Health Educator *For more info on Ron and classical PE methods, visit: http://theleanberets.com/testimonials-rj
