Self-massage is an excellent way to introduce gentle movement into your low back area! It provides a gentle loosening of the tissues by increasing blood circulation and stimulating fascia hydration. These factors encourage more movement, which result in pain reduction. Our goal in this video is to encourage a more supple, resilient back. Your low back has a relatively thick sheet of fascia called the thoracolumbar fascia. This is actually made up of 3 layers (superficial and deep) which lays over your low back muscles. These layers are intended to slide and glide over each other during all of your movement in a supple pain-free kind of way. However, when we sit too long, experience an injury, or just tweak this area, these tissues can get angry! Our movement is reduced, these tissues start to tighten up, matting down and binding together, rather than sliding and gliding across each other. Then here comes the PAIN! We get into a "guarding our pain situation," which reduces our movement even more, which creates a bigger problem.😔 I hope you can see why simple daily massage can be so extremely helpful in combating this downward spiral. With the right tools (Yoga Tune Up® balls are cheap, especially compared to a massage therapist) you can reverse this trend by introducing a little more movement...and a little more movement, safely and gently. You'll supply much needed hydration in the myofascia (muscle + fascia) to increase slide and glide, as well as healing nutrients from improved blood circulation. I show you these simple techniques using the YTU balls either on the floor or on the wall so you can give yourself just the right pressure - not too much, but just right.😊 It's important that you have balls with a little give (NOT lacrosse, softballs, baseballs, etc.) to encourage a melting action in your myofascia vs. a bracing action. Tennis balls work, they just lack the ability to plunge through multiple layers and they tend to slip, rather than grip. However, if your back is not quite up to any pressure from a firm ball, I would invite you to try out the air-filled Coregeous® Ball. My video Lower Back Love • Lower Back Love uses the Coregeous and could be the first step on your back pain healing journey. Here’s the link to order your own YTU® balls: https://www.tuneupfitness.com/?rfsn=6... Of course, if you’re local, to Cache Valley, you can get them from me so I can save you some S/H money!
