QLs or Quadratus Lumborum muscles…what and where in the heck are those? Well, it’s high time you learned about them if: 1) you’ve ever had back pain, or 2) you’d like to dramatically reduce the chances of having back pain! These muscles reside on either side of your spine in your low back area, deep to your latissimus dorsi and erector spinae muscles. They attach from your bottom rib to the top of your pelvis and all along the sides of your lumbar vertebrae. Their main jobs are spinal stability, side bending and hip hiking. A strong, healthy, balanced set of QL’s can keep your low back pain at bay! These muscles, when weak, tight, or imbalanced frequently manifest pain in the low back area, but this pain is relatively simple to address through massage, stretching and strengthening. My favorite way to dive deep and carefully massage this area to break up trigger points is by using the handy dandy Yoga Tune Up® Alpha ball! I’m trying to come up with another similar sized tool that would be effective, in case you don’t have one…but the only thing I can think of is, 1) a Grapefruit, which might explode under pressure, causing a mighty sticky mess, or 2) a Softball, but that’s way too hard and will only cause muscle bracing instead of releasing your myofascia (muscle + fascia). This video will show you how to simply release the pain and tightness in these muscles and the surrounding tissues using a single Alpha Yoga Tune Up® (YTU) ball.
