Writing has become an important role in almost every aspect of life, especially amongst students who need to use writing for countless areas in curriculum. Developing writing proficiency is critical to establishing an identity for each student as a learner, a writer, and an author. Mei Shen emphasizes the importance of helping our students become independent, sufficient, and goal-oriented writers though explicit and systematic instruction. Mei Shen is an assistant professor of special education at SUNY Potsdam. Mei Shen completed her doctoral degree in Special Education at Michigan State University, with a graduate specialization in language and literacy education. Dr. Shen teaches a variety of special education courses, and her research focuses on literacy assessment and instruction for struggling learners, particularly those with mild/moderate disabilities. She is particularly interested in evidence-based instructional practices to help improve reading/writing performance and establish positive reader’s/writer’s identity for these struggling students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
