“Dear Friends, Some lead mines up in the hills have long been closed, but their waste-heaps still spoil a lovely valley. The Fat Controller has now found that this waste is good weed-killing railway ballast. He talked to the Owner and Mr. Peter Sam of the Skarloey Railway, and other important people. They "went shares" and built a Small Railway to fetch it away. The Small Engines are managed by a Controller. They call him the Small Controller, but that is only in fun. He is bigger than either of the others! The Author” Katherine Gell reads today’s story, “Ballast”, taken from the twenty-second “Railway Series” book, “Small Railway Engines”, written by his reverence Wilbert Awdry and illustrated by Gunvor and Peter Edwards. Some new weed-killing ballast, bought by Donald and Douglas, is being laid in the trackbed of the Fat Controller’s railway. Duck is curious when Donald and Douglas tell him “vera wee engines” on another railway that starts from Tidmouth bring it down from the hills. And so, Duck eventually meets three engines from the Arlesdale Railway (or “The Small Railway”): Rex, Bert and Mike… Adapted from the famous “Railway Series” written from 1945 – 2011 by his reverence, Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher, “Sodor Railway Tales” tells the exciting stories of some anthropomorphic engines on the Island of Sodor. See all your old favourite engines from the North Western Railway and the Skarloey Railway!
