Located in the county of Cornwall, and around 15 miles northeast of Newquay, is the town of Wadebridge. Geographically, Wadebridge is situated along the River Camel, around the point where it becomes the Camel Estuary before feeding into the Atlantic Ocean on the north coast of Cornwall. Whilst the area may have been inhabited in one form or another for thousands of years, the first historical mention of Wadebridge itself dates to 1382. At the time, it was known as, simply, Wade, and was the site of a chapel where travellers could give thanks after completing the perilous task of fording, or wading, the River Camel. In the 1460s, the Vicar of Egloshayle (a village around two miles to the east), Thomas Lovibond, ordered the construction of a stone arch bridge, and thus 'Wade' became 'Wadebridge'. The opening of the bridge led to the area's development into a market town, as ships coming up the river would transfer their cargo to horse-drawn carts or barges from here. It was widened in 1853, and again in 1963, and refurbished in 1994. In 1832 the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway Act 1832 was passed, and in 1834 the railway line linking the two named towns was opened. This was the first steam-powered railway line in Cornwall, predating the main line to London by 25 years. The town's station closed to passengers in 1967, and to goods in 1978. Today, public transport to Wadebridge consists of direct buses from Newquay, Padstow, Bodmin and various other nearby locations. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
