The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) is one of the best tourist railroads in the United States, and particularly known for the magnificent Fall colors. Of course, we showed up because one of our favorite locomotives (former United States Army Transportation Corps #1702) is on the head end of most of these trains. *This video was shot over the course of three separate days. October 23, 24, and 28. As per usual, 1702 put on a fantastic show. However, I dare say the crew put on a better show. 1702 would have all sorts of problems throughout October that would require servicing. She would receive all new piston rings (hence why the exhaust sounds a little different), new hangers for one of the leaf springs, and the most noticeable difference: After her lead truck literally seized up, she would receive an old friction bearing lead truck. However, it's not just any old lead truck, it would be Southern Railway #722's old pilot truck. Yes, for the first time since 1985, the lead truck would be put back in active service, and for the first time since 1951, the lead truck would travel west of Dillsboro! Enjoy one of the sights and sounds of one of the most impressive steam locomotives in the South! #smokies #smoky #greatsmokymountains #steam #train #railroad #railway #steamlocomotive #steamtrain #fall
