The 13th & 14th September 2024 marked the end of an era in Gippsland with V/Line operating a locomotive-hauled train to Bairnsdale for the final time. Since 2018 trains 8469 & 8460; being the evening train from Melbourne to Bairnsdale and the return morning trip from Bairnsdale to Melbourne were the last two trains on the Gippsland Line to be rostered with a N Class locomotive-hauled train. These trains were commonly nicknamed the Gippslander which was the historic name used by the Victorian Railways for their flagship train between Melbourne and Bairnsdale. However a new timetable that came into effect on the 15th September 2024 has seen these two trains swapped out with Vlocity DMU's. In this video we say farewell to the Gippslander by chasing the final locomotive-hauled train with locomotive N471 from Melbourne to Bairnsdale on Friday 13th September, before chasing it back to Melbourne the following morning on Saturday 14th September. We start the chase at Beaconsfield where we get an awesome horn show from the driver in tribute to former local resident and rail enthusiast Christian Dervey, before catching up to it again at Yarragon. After being heavily delayed near Moe due to a trespasser we see the train arrive and depart Traralgon almost a hour behind schedule. We then see the train arrive into Bairnsdale for the final time. The following morning we see the train depart Bairnsdale for the final time amid sombre rainy weather. We then see the train arrive at Rosedale, before seeing it fly through Trafalgar. Back in Melbourne we see the train pass underneath the city skyline on the Flinders Street viaduct, before seeing the Gippslander depart Southern Cross for the final time empty cars with a majestic horn show! It marks an end of an era for the Gippsland Line and another chapter in the demise of locomotive-hauled trains in Victoria. As of now the only two remaining lines that see N Class locomotive-hauled trains are Swan Hill and Warrnambool. I considered this chase to be one of the most hectic train chases I've ever done. Chasing it one way without stopping for four hours on the road is no mean feat and the stakes were high; if you miss a shot there's no way you can get it ever again. Thankfully careful planning and good luck meant I was able to get all of the shots I intended to get. Also shoutout to @PannierProductions9600 for suggesting that I could get the train departing Southern Cross after getting a clip at Southbank, I wasn't planning on getting it departing Southern Cross as I didn't think I would get there in time. Thankfully it departed around 5 minutes or so after I had arrived. Subscribe to ThebusofdoomFSX: https://www.youtube.com/user/Thebusof... Facebook: / thebusofdooms-transport-videos-27510006958...
