Blame cannot be attributed solely to the individual for crimes he or she committed. Economic conditions, surroundings, and support systems play an important role in determining how much a person is at risk of becoming a criminal. Rather than blame and punish, we should instead be more focused on rehabilitation, encouragement, and support starting from family, to friends and the community, to society as a whole. Sothie is a lawyer and earned his Juris Doctor and Masters of Law from Northwestern University. He worked at Human Rights Watch, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, and the International Criminal Court. After graduating, he became a criminal defense trial attorney for the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office, providing legal representation to indigent persons. Sothie’s goal is to continue helping and contributing to the development of Cambodia’s jurisprudence.
