I have been thinking about exploring the railways around Hammond Indiana for quite a while. It has a reputation for being a potentially dangerous place to go on your own. I had the chance so I decided to go and explore, although it isn't the nicest place in the world I wouldn't consider it dangerous at least not in daylight hours. It was a cold Sunday in January, I started out at Hammond/Whiting Amtrak station. Not many trains stop here now and the 2 Amtrak trains I saw didn't stop. I didn't get a chance to video either of them, as I managed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as they went by. I did manage to catch an NS stack train, that's the first clip. Then I went off trying to find some Indiana Harbour Belt trains, but I never saw anything. I then took a tour of the Cliffe Cleveland Steel plant but there's no where to stop and film from, not that I could find. Eventually I ended up back in Hammond at the Whiting Lake Front Park. Here I saw a grain train, it stopped further down the track to let a stack train pass, then a manifest came through heading west with 5 BNSF locos. It then passed another stack train. After this I needed to get warm and decided to drive over to Elmhurst, the UP mainline is usually busy on a Sunday afternoon. The first train was a west bound stack train but I didn't have time to video it, this was followed the metra services passing at Elmhurst , this was quickly followed by a west bound manifest, then an east bound coal train. It turned out to have pushers at the rear. Next was another stack train heading west and once it moved out the way the pushers on the coal train came into view. By then I was cold and went to get some food.
