Flexible Working That Works: Balancing Workload, Engagement & the Staff Experience Flexible working is becoming a defining feature of the Higher Education workforce — but designing models that genuinely support engagement, workload and performance is far from straightforward. In this Learn & Share session, People Insight’s Jane Tidswell (HE Director) is joined by Ilona Lewicka, Head of HR at University of Sunderland in London, and Suzanne Christopher, HE Engagement Lead at People Insight, to explore how flexible working can be implemented in practice within a complex academic environment. The session centres on a real-world case study from University of Sunderland in London (UoSiL), including their four-day working week pilot, alongside insights from global research such as Iceland’s landmark four-day week trial. Rather than focusing on theory, this conversation looks at what flexible working actually looks like inside a live Higher Education institution — and what other universities can learn from it. In this session, you’ll learn: • How flexible working can support a wider engagement and retention strategy • The real impact on workload, collaboration and wellbeing • How a four-day working week pilot can be designed within a year-round teaching environment • What global evidence from Iceland’s four-day week trial tells us about productivity and staff experience • Practical considerations for universities exploring flexible working models Speakers Jane Tidswell – HE Director, People Insight Ilona Lewicka – Head of HR, University of Sunderland in London Suzanne Christopher – HE Engagement Lead, People Insight Who this session is for HR leaders, People & Culture teams, Organisational Development specialists and senior leaders working in Higher Education who are exploring how to balance flexibility, engagement and operational performance.
