Join me to discover which doughnut recipe wins! These classic forgotten old fashioned doughnuts will bring you back in time! I found them in an old 1960’s church cookbook! Lutheran Doughnut Recipe: (Kitchen Chatter Cookbook, 1960’s- Illinois Zion Ladies Aid) 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup softened butter 2 eggs 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 2 cups flour + ( you may need to add an additional 1.5 cups of flour to make the dough less sticky for rolling) 1. Mix in order given. 2. Roll out dough- let rest 15 minutes. 3. Cut out doughnuts & fry in hot oil- 360 F for 2-3 minutes a side or until golden brown. You may roll them in nutmeg sugar if desired Makes about 16 small doughnuts. Baptist Doughnut Recipe: (Kitchen Chatter Cookbook) 1/2 cup sugar 1 beaten egg 1.5 tablespoons lard, melted 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 3/4 cups flour 1. Beat eggs well & beat in sugar, lard, and a tiny bit of the buttermilk. Mix in the baking sugar da with the rest of the buttermilk. 2. Sift together the dry ingredients & add alternately with the buttermilk. 3. Roll out, let rest for 15 minutes, then cut out doughnuts. Fry in 360F oil for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. You may roll them in nutmeg sugar or glaze them. Makes about 16 small doughnuts & doughnut holes.
