Topic: Enabling Food Environments to address the triple burden of malnutrition in South Africa Abstract: Food environments are defined by the availability, prices, vendors, product properties, marketing and regulation of food products (external domain) as well as their accessibility, affordability, convenience and desirability for individuals (personal domain). These factors shape food acquisition and consumption, a key determinant in health and nutrition outcomes. South Africa is burdened by persistent undernutrition in children, specifically stunting, micronutrient malnutrition in women and children, as well as an epidemic of overweight and obesity among women and men with rapidly growing prevalence of overweight in children and adolescents. Speaker Biography: Rina Swart is a professor in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of the Western Cape and also serves as the Nutrition programme lead within the DSI/NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security.
