The year 2026 marks 50 years since the Amfleet I Passenger Cars were first operated by Amtrak in Southern California during the year 1976. The Amfleet I passenger cars were Amtrak's first new passenger cars to ever be equipped with Head-End Power, or otherwise known as HEP for short. These Amfleet I passenger cars eventually replaced the Heritage Fleet railcars that Amtrak had inherited from other passenger railroads for service on their short distance routes. Before the arrival of the Amfleet I passenger cars, all of Amtrak's Heritage Fleet railcars were equipped with steam heating instead of HEP. As soon as the Amfleet I passenger cars arrived, the Heritage Fleet railcars would be retired from Amtrak's short distance routes as a new generation of passenger cars took over. And right after the Amfleet I passenger cars entered official service, the Heritage Fleet railcars would be equipped with HEP and continue in service on Amtrak's long distance routes east of Chicago over the next several decades before being retired during the early 2020s. The permanent replacement for the Heritage Fleet railcars would end up being the Viewliner I and Viewliner II Passenger Cars, which had been in production during the 1990s before continuing all the way to the present day. In addition, the Amfleet I passenger cars would not just be the first brand new passenger equipment to be equipped with HEP, but they would also be the last brand new passenger cars to ever be built by the Budd Company. In this video, I have to decided to put together a compilation of all the Amfleet I passenger cars in service on the Pacific Surfliner, which looks more like a Modern era version of Amtrak's San Diegan Trains, which used to operate on the Surf Line between 1938 and 2000 before the Pacific Surfliner even existed beginning in 2000. I hope you enjoyed this video, and I'll see you next time for more exciting railroading and non-railroading adventures right here on the YouTube channel.
