A horizontal saddle angle, or slightly nose down saddle tilt is usually the most comfortable to ride on. This gives the best combination of a stable pelvis position and less compression of the tissues, nerves and blood vessels in the front of the pelvis area. A slightly downward tilt on the saddle can assist forward rotation of the pelvis, improve aerodynamics and reduce perineal numbness even further. A saddle that is tilted too far down can be problematic, as can one that is pointing upwards. Fortunately it is simple to measure the angle of your saddle and make adjustments. Unless you have a curved saddle - which can become tricky! Interestingly, we are now starting to see professional riders positioning their saddles with substantial nose down angles, and amateur riders are experimenting with this as well. Why this change? We now have good research evidence that a tilted down saddle can give substantial performance gains with uphill riding, where bike races are often won or lost. Even I was surprised when I found out how much difference this makes. One study predicted a 61 second improvement for a fit amateur rider climbing Alpe d”Huez. The reasons are: Optimised angle of the pelvis Improved pedalling dynamics Better muscle recruitment Less upper body effort Greater metabolic efficiency In this video I’ll explain both the traditional approach to setting saddle angle AND THEN take you through the remarkable science behind the emerging saddle angle performance hack!
