In the vicinity of Choi Hung Estate and Ping Shek Estate, there is a historic Ngau Chi Wan Village, which has a history of over 200 years. It is one of the oldest villages among the "Thirteen Villages of Kowloon," along with the more familiar Lei Yue Mun and Chaguoling villages, and it is one of the few remaining tenement villages in the urban area. Ngau Chi Wan Village has now been included in the government's redevelopment plan, and the tenement area connecting to Lung Chi Path will be gradually demolished in 2025. The "Thirteen Villages of Kowloon" refers to the larger villages located in the area from Kowloon City to Lei Yue Mun after World War II. To construct Choi Hung Road and Choi Hung MTR Station, the area of Ngau Chi Wan Village has been modified and reduced multiple times. It currently consists mainly of the tenement area, Kam Chi Path, and Lung Chi Path, serving as a concentrated living area for residents. The entire Kam Chi Path essentially functions as an open-air market where nearby villagers also come to buy groceries. Lung Chi Path features various shops, including convenience stores, a row of barber shops, and a village office that has been preserved since earlier years. There are many restaurants and food stalls, offering a variety of cheap and unique traditional dishes. Even the Michelin-rated Ting Ba Restaurant has chosen this location, highlighting its popularity. Not only do residents and students frequent the area, but even people from the opposite Choi Hung Estate, Ping Shek Estate, and even Sai Kung residents walk over to eat. Ngau Chi Wan Village is home to many restaurants that have been in operation for decades. Among the most historic and hidden is the Po Fook Restaurant. Established in 1964, it has been in business for 61 years. The restaurant is tucked away at the end of Ngau Chi Wan West Village, and first-time visitors need to look for signs and walk down steps to find it. It features a classic old-style tea stall layout with beige and white patterned tiles, and the handwritten menu by the owner on the wall adds a nostalgic and warm touch, making it more elegant than typical tea restaurants. Mr. Chow, the owner, founded Po Fook Restaurant with his father when he was 17 years old. This ground-level tea restaurant is a government-registered tenement building. It has always been family-operated, with Mr. Chow handling the cooking, his son managing the cash register and drinks, and family members serving customers. Since its opening, the food offered has remained unchanged—simple dishes with a homestyle flavor that maintain a high standard, priced affordably to give back to regular customers. The most popular items here are the special set meal and red bean ice. The special set meal starts at 70 cents, with an annual increase of no more than 50 cents. Currently, the special set meal is $31, which includes satay beef noodles, ham omelet, butter toast, and hot coffee or tea. Switching to iced drinks or red bean ice costs an additional $1, making it a great value. The satay beef noodle sauce is homemade, not too thick, and has a homestyle flavor, with generous portions of fragrant beef. The red bean ice uses the most expensive red beans, cooked until soft while retaining a chewy texture. The ice is also hand-crushed into small pieces, truly embodying the traditional red bean ice experience.
