The human eye works like a camera to help us see the colorful world around us. Light enters through a thin layer called the cornea and passes through a lens that focuses the image onto a sensitive screen at the back called the retina. Our eyes have a special power called accommodation that allows the lens to change its shape using muscles, helping us focus clearly on objects that are both near and far away. For a person with normal vision, the most comfortable distance to read is about 25 cm, but sometimes old age or other issues can make vision blurry, leading to conditions like cataracts. There are three common vision defects that can be corrected with special lenses. Myopia, or near-sightedness, happens when a person can see nearby things clearly but distant objects look blurry, and this is fixed using a concave lens. Hypermetropia, or far-sightedness, is the opposite, where a person sees distant objects well but struggles with reading close up, which is corrected with a convex lens. Another issue called presbyopia happens as people get older and their eyes lose the flexibility to focus on nearby objects, often requiring glasses with two types of lenses to see clearly. Light also creates beautiful effects in nature when it travels through different materials. When white light passes through a glass prism or raindrops, it splits into seven colors to form a spectrum or a rainbow. The air around Earth bends light in a process called atmospheric refraction, which makes stars twinkle and changes the apparent position of the sun at sunrise and sunset. Additionally, tiny particles in the air scatter sunlight, making the sky appear blue because blue light scatters the most, while red light scatters the least and is used for danger signals.
