Glen Villa: A Private Garden of Extraordinary Vision in North Hatley, Quebec

Glen Villa Art Garden is a private garden of 750 acres located on a beautiful lake near the very charming little town of North Hatley, Quebec. It has beautiful garden plantings and great water features but what gives it its special character is its many art installations evoking the lives of the owners, Patterson Webster and her now deceased husband Norman, as well as the long history of the property. There is a lower garden that focuses on the Webster’s own story and the history of a long-gone hotel that once stood on the property. Norman Webster was one of Canada’s famous journalists who led a peripatetic life reporting from China and many other locations. I also walk the upper, ‘Timelines’ section of the garden which includes a 4.5km walk with many installations reaching further back into the history of the property, including the stories of the indigenous peoples that first owned the land. Patterson Webster has written a great book describing how she planned and developed her garden entitled, ‘Autobiography of a Garden’. In it she chronicles all the work and thinking that went into the various installations of her garden and in my short video I have only touched the surface of all that her garden has to offer. Any mistakes that I have made are very much my own.
