[00:00:04] The Hard Transition: The move from Peseta to Euro (2000-2002) hit Spain harder than decimalisation hit the UK. [00:00:27] The Value of 100 Pesetas: The 100 Peseta coin was the standard unit of value, but it was only worth 60 cents. [00:00:55] Salary Conversion: Salaries were converted exactly (1 Euro = 166.386 Pesetas), but consumer prices were rounded up. [00:01:32] Overnight Price Hikes: Vending machines and fairground rides that cost 100 Pesetas (60 cents) jumped to 1 Euro (166 Pesetas) overnight. [00:02:11] Getting Stung: Consumers paid 66% more for common items, but salaries remained computer-calculated and unrounded. "The transition from the Peseta to the Euro—when we changed from the Peseta to the Euro in the year 2000 to 2002—we really got hit hard with that transition. British people always say to me: 'Oh yeah, we got hit hard when we had decimalisation in the UK, but in Spain, you have no idea how badly it hit us.' Where we really got stung in Spain, is that when you're using the Peseta, the coin that you had in your pocket that had worth was the 100 Peseta coin. It was as thick as a pound coin. 100 Pesetas was actually 60 cents. It wasn't a Euro; it was just over half a Euro—60 cents. So that was the coin that you put in everything, like a trolley or a vending machine, a merry-go-round at the fair. When we went to the Euro, they transferred the salaries exactly: 1,000 Pesetas was going to be 6 Euros, and that 1 Euro was going to be 166.386 Pesetas. But what happened was they changed all of the vending machines and merry-go-rounds to accept 1 Euro coins. So overnight, we went from putting in 100 Pesetas (60 cents) to 1 Euro overnight. We went from paying 100 Pesetas for everything to 166 Pesetas for everything, because everything went to 1 Euro—from 60 cents to 1 Euro. And nobody batted an eye. They go: 'Yeah, but it's only a Euro.' Yes, but a Euro isn't 100 Pesetas. We really got stung on so many things. What didn't get rounded up? The salaries. They stayed the same because big numbers were just worked out via a computer."
